5 Great reasons to start a blog

Why should you blog too?

There are many good reasons to start a blog and the multitude of blog posts on the Internet covering this topic should tell you that blogging is a good thing, especially for the right reasons. But honestly, who wants to read 45 reasons why you should also have a blog? I thought I’d cut that number down to five excellent reasons that should answer the question of why you should start a blog, now!

Everyone has something they like to do and share with the world. Whether to show off their knowledge, pain, happiness, tips to save money, or time hacks. And yes, there are already millions of blogs on the internet, but there is always room for more because we are not cookie-cutter people.

Each person is unique even if we share similar traits, so there is not one blog that covers it all. The world, and the Internet for that matter, is a big, no, a HUGE place!

Are you thinking about starting a blog, but you’re not sure whether to do it? Read on to find out five compelling reasons we think you should! You may still be working or are already retired, but like an endless buffet there is a reason for each person to have a blog, if you want to:

1. Share your passions

Is your passion cooking, politics, photography or something else? Can’t stop talking about your favorite dish? By blogging you can share your passion and connect with others with the same interest. You no longer have to watch your non-cooking friend get glassy-eyed when you share the latest grilling technique on coals. There is a whole sea of people who like what you like and understand your passion, even if you’ll never meet face to face. You can create connections and friendships with your blog!

2. Improve your writing skills

If you love to write or want to get better at it, blogging can help you improve it. And I’m not talking about Spell Check, although that helps too! The more you write the better you get at it and the feedback from your readers can also have a positive influence. Reading what others write or doing research for your own writing will broaden your horizon on various topics. Reading + Writing = Learning, and of course teaching flows out of this.

3. Share your knowledge

Do you love to teach? Whether it is in a formal or casual setting, with a blog you can share your knowledge with others without the limitations of place and time. Your blog is available 24/7, all day and all week long! And if you do it well, you may even be able to monetize your blog by offering educational products online and make some money on the side!

4. Build an online portfolio

If you’re an aspiring freelancer or artist, blogging is a great way to build up an online portfolio. The days of having your portfolio in a folder and showing your work only to people you meet in person are over. Everything (or almost everything) is online nowadays, eliminating the restrictions of who can see what you’ve been up to. You can grow your exposure by showcasing your skills on large platforms to get new clients.

5. Grow your business

By blogging you can connect with others and build a professional network which can be used to market your business. Do not blog only for the sake of marketing, because no one wants to be constantly pitched! But if you share valuable information (for free!) with your peers, they may want to share it with their network, thereby ‘growing’ yours. People want to know that there is a person behind your business, so show them your ‘human’ side too!

Do any (or all) of the five reasons above resonate with you? You’re not alone!
I started my first blog with my sister to share our passion for food. We just couldn’t and still can’t shut up talking about eating good and sometimes exotic food in restaurants or experiments at home. A blog was the way to go.
It improved our writing skills (my sister was always into writing and now she is also doing a great job writing in English too!) and I learned how to find reliable resources for my research.
I used to say that I didn’t want to be a teacher, but found out along the way that I love to share what I know about blogging and WordPress to whoever has interest and willingness to learn.
The best way to share the results of my online experiments is by blogging and showing others that I can indeed help them do the same. In turn, this helps me gain the trust of visitors who may become my customers.

Why you should NOT blog

Blogging is not for you if you want to keep your passions or stories to yourself. If you are already great at writing and are a successful author of many books. If you don’t think others may benefit from what you know and plan on taking all your knowledge when you pass on to eternity. If you don’t think others may like or want to see examples of your work or art. And lastly, if you like your business the way it is and see no need to grow it, then no, blogging is not for you. We still love you anyways!!
